What central air conditioning is

A split central AC system has two halves: an indoor evaporator coil (usually on top of your furnace) and an outdoor condenser with a compressor. Refrigerant circulates between them in a sealed loop while the furnace blower pushes your home's air across the cold coil and back through the ducts.

The compressor is the heart of the system. It pressurizes refrigerant so it can release the heat it collected indoors. Your thermostat simply tells this loop when to run.
